which makes the air conditioning quit working on a BMW 330ci 2001?

my air conditioner worked very well. then, suddenly, I seem to hear this knocking noise and the air conditioning stopped working. the whole unit itself will not turn over. i can not turn on the air or heat or defroster my work. I checked the fuse and they all seem fine. I have said it could be the compressor but the air still has to leave, but not cold. Then I heard it could be the fan or relay? any ideas, suggestions or advice?
