Would it be possible to turn an air compressor pump in a steam engine?

I've been thinking about a steam engine, but I do not feel able to make the general engineering, drilling, pistons, rings, lubrication system etc. I read an article on the net to make a car a / c comp into a steam engine, but it was a great article, so I figured a normal compressor would probably be better, any ideas?
